Feb 17, 2025 | 8:23 AM

Try this simple abdominal breathing exercise to relieve stress or anxiety.

Feeling stressed or anxious? You can improve your mood, anytime and anywhere, just by taking a few deep abdominal breaths.

Deep breathing has an immediate calming effect on your body, slowing your heart rate and reducing your blood pressure. Since it lowers stress, it’s good for your heart and your overall well-being. Deep breathing can also ease your aches and pains, help you to sleep better and improve your blood flow. This, in turn, boosts your energy level.

Try this simple deep abdominal breathing exercise:

  1. Sit or lie comfortably.
  2. Put one hand on your chest and one hand on your stomach.
  3. Slowly inhale through your nose, filling your stomach with air. You should feel your belly expand.
  4. Slowly exhale through your mouth. You should feel your belly deflate.
  5. Rest, then repeat steps 1 through 4 several times.
