This alternative medicine is gaining in popularity and may be able to help you.

A child with allergies. A woman with carpal tunnel syndrome. An older man with arthritis.

People are often surprised at the range of health issues that can be helped by acupuncture.

Acupuncture works by promoting blood circulation, which can calm the nervous system, decrease inflammation and harmonize the body’s hormones. It also acts on beta cells to decrease pain.

In pain management, acupuncture is particularly useful treating migraines and sciatica pain, experts say. Some practitioners even use acupuncture to treat pain caused by sports injuries. It can also provide relief for irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, anxiety and insomnia.

Because acupuncture can stimulate our bodies’ hormones, it can be used quite effectively for fertility treatments, as well as for women undergoing menopause. For example, if you have symptoms of hot flashes and night sweats, consider acupuncture to even out some of the more uncomfortable symptoms of PMS.

There are even acupuncture treatments to help people quit smoking or drinking.

Needle-phobic? Acupuncturists say there is nothing to be afraid of. In fact, the needles used are so fine they actually bend. And people who’ve had acupuncture say it’s very calming and relaxing.
