Lifestyle Changes to Lower Your Cholesterol Naturally

Statins may not be the only solution to cholesterol problems.

Under the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association’s new guidelines for statins, an estimated 13 million additional Americans now qualify to take the cholesterol-lowering medications.

But statins should not necessarily be the first option for everyone when it comes to a healthier heart and body. Instead, consider taking statins and supplements if needed, plus a few lifestyle changes.

What sort of lifestyle changes? Here are three ways to lower cholesterol naturally:

Get moving. Buy a pedometer and aim to walk at least 10,000 steps every day.

Reduce saturated fats. Avoid fried and processed foods. Limit dairy and meats. Eat foods high in fiber and whole grains. Transition to eating more vegetables and fruits, which are anti-inflammatory. Fruits and veggies are also ripe with antioxidants that prevent stiff arteries and can help reduce LDL (the so-called “bad”) cholesterol.

Unplug. Mobile devices keep us connected to our lives while also bombarding us with information and creating stress. That leads to damaging stress hormones being released, paving the way for heart disease.

“Downshifting” is crucial. Devote a part of your day to slowing down and just having fun.

And remember: With all these lifestyle adjustments, take baby steps. A person must make changes they can live with.
